They Called Her Witch

Description

In days of old when panic reigned
Among the people of the day.
A woman was not safe to live
Alone with no man her heart to give.

No family there to share her life;
To shoulder the medieval strife.
Alone she stay'd upon the hill...
Inside a cottage small & still.

One night they came with torches lit;
Young girls falling down in fits.
Accusations filled the air...
The stench of hatred's rotting fare.

When the men broke through the fence,
She knew her time was coming hence.
When then the door was splintered through,
They thought a chase would there ensue.

But bravely there she stood alone.
Quietly, like polished stone.
Elegantly her presence spoke
Amid the screams & blinding smoke.

Beaten & stripped & branded thus,
She endured without a fuss.
Her courage vanely misconstruded;
Their taunts became vile and crude.

When last they hung her from the gates
For all to see the Witches fate
She hung inverted to their eyes
And spoke these word with dying sighs...

"Forgive them Lord & Lady for what they do. They do not know and misconstrue my gifts you've given to heal their pains so cleanse them of their human stains."

With this her final breath released,
The taunts & accusation ceased.
A silence fell; the night black as pitch,
Because some one had called her Witch.

In the days following the completion of this piece I studied it and thought of the burning times... the hysteria... the innocent lives and the torture they endured at the hands of their own families, neighbors & countrymen. Humans should by now be expert at the emotion of shame. We have disgraced ourselves so many times throughout history.

I wrote this poem inspired by that contemplation. Its why it was posted after the image was.

I wish to offend no one... its merely my own opinion & perception. I have rated this mature for obvious reasons.
